Re: New to this, need help with routine

...my back muscles are too weak [for isometrics in horse stance] ...he recommended that I a)start doing kettlebell workouts 2-3 times a week and b) do a manageable amount of body weight squats and lunges everyday, not to fatigue but just to get used to the form and keep doing that until I can easil...

Re: Order of Aerobic Running in Weekly Training.

GNARL: Splitting workouts? When to do back exercises? I guess it depends on what you are training for. I split upper body (UB) and lower body (LB) into separate workouts so I can finish everything within 1.5 hours or, preferably, one hour. I've doubled up, doing both UB and LB in the same workout at...

Re: Order of Aerobic Running in Weekly Training.

GNARL: I believe that while strength workouts for most body parts need at least a day recovery, the trunk (core) muscles may be worked every day, so running and speed bag practice on the same day should be fine. Obviously, as CSta was getting at with his references, you might not want to do a very h...

Re: Knee pain during side splits

Kazama, This is, I admit, a shot in the dark, but I wonder if the popliteus, a knee flexor, could be part of the problem. I believe it inserts close to where the IT band attachs at the outer knee. Maybe a medical professional could confirm that. This knee flexor is responsible for the medial (intern...

Re: Sit-ups

Exercises fall out of vogue that require prerequisite conditioning or strength. Conventional situps are one of those. "To remain free from injury, do crunches..." Good advice for persons out of shape, or folks with chronic back problems, I suppose. If one's hip flexors or lower back are weak, one sh...

Role of static stretching in warm up

Would anyone comment on Michael Boyle’s Dec-03 article, "The Static Stretching Renaissance," posted at http://www.strengthcoach.com/public/1333.cfm , wherein he states: …A lack of flexibility seems to be a causative factor in many of the gradual onset injury conditions that plague today's athletes. ...

Re: Upper Back pain after exercise

amz, I know someone whose “back problem is old,” who can’t figure out why his upper back spasms occasionally, even though he works out regularly and is very fit. One day, he demonstrated for me something he does with bands involving standing with bands behind him, starting low and pulling the bands ...

Re: Upper Back pain after exercise

Amz

The first question I would ask is what you did before getting the muscle spasm. Is there some new exercise in your routine that may have caused it?

Re: Sequence for Begginers

The answer will depend on the intensity of each of the steps you mention, as well as what you mean by "Stretching Exercise for Side and Front Splits." Kurz' article #16, entitled "Examples of Good and Bad Workouts," may help answer your question. See: http://www.stadion.com/column_stretch16.html Goo...

Re: back fatigue and slow hamstring recovery

CSta, I just came across a little comment in Feb-09 copy of Runners World magazine, p. 58, near as I can quote: “When core is not stable, hamstrings have to work extra hard to stabilize the core, leaving them shorter, tighter.” That, and your post, got me web-searching… The most technical explanatio...

Re: CSta's workout log

CSta, Sorry to hear you continue to be frustrated with slow hamstring recovery/ recurrent hamstring injury (Dec 18th post), and wondering if I could shed light on the problem. If I understand correctly, from Week 1, you have done dynamic leg raises to front, side and rear in almost every workout as ...

Re: Several short sessions daily

I do live at the gym--it's in my basement. Had to join a health club recently for access to the pool. Haven't had a need for it until now, or the time--all that dressing up and traveling to and from. Furthermore, participating in routines custom made for someone else was never my thing. At ho...

Re: Dynamic/Static Active RoM tricks

CSta, Yes, I see your point and you are most likely correct; perhaps you should ask tyciol. :) Not to defend my previous post, but it may not matter, with regard to relative strength or injury, whether the muscle is extremely stretched or extremely shortened (as I continue way off topic). In his Jul...
