Re: Why punch when you can kick?
I am always encouraged to hear of schools that are well balanced and teaching all aspects of any given art regardless of the base being Korean, Japanese, Chinese etc. I would like to address a couple of your points. Your reference to Judo, boxing and wrestling as sports is mostly correct. As a resul...

Re: Why punch when you can kick?
Competing for points, for trophies etc. is nice if that is what you consider your past time. Some people golf, some play tennis and others play martial arts. Martial is war or warrior arts. I can speak from personal experience that you will do in the street what you practice in the dojo or dojang. Y...

Thank you for your reply. You made some good suggestions. I didn't mean to come off as being against Dr's but I have seen good and the bad. I am offended when I pay good money and need their help and I get a two or three minute discussion and it is always done and he is on his way. In the time since...

recovery from surgery
I know a Dr should answer this but the specifics have been asked and not received as even sports surgeons are not that familiar with black belts who train and teach for a living. I just had arthoscropic surgery on my knee and had meniscus pad cut out and some other tissue and loose tissue trimmed ou...

To begin, I know I should see a Dr but I need some advice before as the last consultation on a problem brought me before two different Dr and an assistant who gave 3 seperate opinions and one was from an orthopedic surgeon. In my test for 4th dan I injured my right knee. I am not sure now. It has be...

Losing weight a sure and safe way
I am a 49 year old martial artist with 5 black belts and two small schools. I am testing for my next advanced dan rank soon and need to get my weight down. I also feel as a good example to my students I need to slim down. I am 5' 10" and weight 200lb and feel I should be between 170 & 180. I have tr...

Upper body isometrics
Has anyone had any success with doing upper body isometrics? There are many different types such as pushing one hand against the other for 6-8 seconds etc. For a martial artist what would be some good upper body isometric exercises?

Wrist strength
I could use some suggestions on ways to develop more wrist strength. When hittiing a kicking shield or punching bag sometimes I twist the wrist and it takes weeks to heal. How do I get it stronger to withstand front and reverse punches?

Hindu squats
After reading a number of positive articles about them I started having my students do them. So far there has been no discomfort from them. I am doing them to but have stayed at low reps so far. I have found if I get lazy and don't do them for a week or two and then I notice my knees feeling weak an...

Losing weight-what nutritional approach
I have tried the Atkins diet and have had slower results than most. I must take medicine for seizures and this may interfer, I am not sure. For a martial arts instructor who is preparing for his next test what would a good diet be? Anyone had experience with Atkins or any other approach that was ben...

Flexibility development for older athletes
:) Suggestions on training methods for a 49 year old martial arts instructor would be appreciated. Specifically on how to do a better job of working towards a split. I am slowly iimproving on a front split but not on a side split. What does it mean when on a side split I feel some pain on the inside...
