Re: do sit-ups and leg raises reduce hip flexibility?

Maybe if you did ONLY leg raises. But keep in mind: part of the chronic shortening in hip flexors is due to weakness and disuse as much as it is with being in that position. With leg raises you go into a stretched position under load, I would think that would help prevent shortening. Now with hangin...

Adductor flies: gauging depth

Does anyone have any ways to gauge the depth of their adductor flies? What I'm worried is as I add weight or get tired that I'll stop going to the same depth. Ideally that's something I want to increase as I get more flexible. I've been thinking of maybe putting a pair of ottomans (padded foot rests...

Partner-assisted stretching: always a waste?

This is criticized in SS on the basis that the partner is neither resting or stretching. What about partner-assistance when both partners are stretching? For example, there is one stretch I've seen a lot in Japan where partners stand back to back, link arms, and then alternatively one bends forward ...

Re: No barbells or kettlebells

Dumbbells can also be used in movements to strengthen the legs and core. Lunges for example are easier to do with dumbbells held at the sides, and most difficult with dumbbells held overhead. The nautilus machines may also be useful but it's hard to say without knowing which ones your gym has. Machi...

Re: handstand side split drills

When you say there are drills for this, do you know them, or are you asking what they might be? I imagine that due to the lower center of gravity and staggered limbs (like holding arms out to sides) it might be easier to balance with legs splayed compared to straight up. It seems like it might let y...

Re: very tight adductors

lie flat on your stomach and lift one leg to the side toes pointing forwards like a one legged road kill split. u cannot really cheat in ne way and your definately only using one legs flexibilty. This is a cool idea, just trying it out now, anchored the heel of stretched leg on some furniture to ke...

Re: bodyblade

Fast twitch fibres are worked with increased resistance. Slow twitch fibres are always getting worked anyway, you can't even work fast twitch without the slow twitch also being active. Increasing the resistance seems like a more reliable and measurable way to work the fast twitch fibres. Certainly d...

Re: metabolic profile for trditional martial art

You do get aerobic benefits from your anaerobic shotokon training, however you can certainly supplement them with more generic stuff. You wouldn't be pushing the limits of endurance while focusing on complex techniques just like you wouldn't learn complex techniques while exhausted.

Re: Getting Started But Also Need To Strenghten Knees

I remember in one of his videos Mr. Kurz was doing squats, though he was doing them hindu-style (heels off ground) standing in snow or something... not sure if that's for beginners or not.

Re: Help to involve stretches?

This is understandable concern, like clearly training your legs to failure after your lesson wouldn't be an option as it would compromise your next day's training. You want to supplement to increase your strength and flexibility yet with a minor stimulus so that you are still fresh for your techniqu...

Re: Good Morning lift vs Deadlift

I think good mornings look pretty cool, I always figured the main benefit to a deadlift was the lack of compression of the skin back there which would be uncomfortable, also being able to ditch/drop the weight. Good mornings are suited for lighter weight stuff like, if you were doing a stiff-legged ...

Re: IRON BOOTS !!

I saw this thread mentioned in the recent newsletter. I've been wondering, does anyone use these iron boots for front leg raises too? I mean like the ones you might do lying on your back to train the hip flexors primarily in their lengthened position. I imagine you'd need really strong abs for these...

Re: explosive kicks/snap in kicks

Above and beyond the benefit of increasing resistance that you mentioned Cindy, there is also the momentum factor where when you accelerate the ankle weights, when they stop at the end of the kick it can jerk and if you don't absorb it with your muscles (which is hard to do when they're all stretche...

Re: Interesting observation

For OP, when you talk about max strength training with your faster partner, what movement are you using to test this strength, and what kind of kicks is he faster at? I'm just wondering if it's something like comparing a pistol to a side kick, or something less comparable like a squat with a roundho...
