Whenever I do any motion that involves me spreading my right leg outward, it hurts the outside of my hip. Even when I'm sitting down on my computer and if I twist my right leg outward enough, it starts to hurt.
When I'm doing the butterfly stretch, if I go down or if I push my knees down far enough, the same spot hurts but with a different kind of pain. This pain is the same though, with the pain that I get when doing side splits. I've tried tilting my pelvis forward but that doesn't work. I try to do them with my feet pointed upwards and still nothing.
I'm pretty close the the floor with this split (about 5 inches after warming up and stretching for about 15 minutes or so) and this is the only thing that's holding me back from achieving it.
Please help

Hip Pain During Side Splits
Have you seen someone who can test your hip joints and the muscles around them? Someone like a physical therapist, an orthopedic surgeon, or a chiropractor?

No I haven't but I will in time. I just wanted to see if anyone had the same problem as I did. I'm even further down on my side splits and I now have about 2-3 inches left to go but I experience a lot of pain in the same region.
My friend suggested that it may be a ligament problem but isn't sure.
Also my right hip bone (I think trochanter?) sticks out more than my left. I don't know if this may have anything to do with it though.

Re: Hip Pain During Side Splits
Hello everyone, it's been a long time since The last time I was on this forum. Lately, I've been having a problem similar to the OP. except, my problem has more to do with doing the isometric side splits version. I started about a month ago trying the isometric side split, just like Mr. Kurz has demonstrated and explained in both his book, Stretching Scientifically, and ones of his website articles. During and after each time I do the isometric side split the outside of my hips hurt. I have been trying to figure out why this has been happening to me, but to no avail. I've read the Stretching Scientifically book very thoroughly many times, and not only have I been following Mr. Kurz's instructions to the T on how to do the isometric side splits, but also before i ever tried doing it, work for months on strengthening and conditioning legs, back and hips until I finally met all of Mr. Kurz's standard levels of strength and conditioning needed to be fully prepared for the isometric side split. I can comfortably stiff-legged deadlift weight that is twice bodyweight, I can ATG barbell back squat (high-bar) a weight that is equivalent to my body weight about 20 times. So what should I do?

Re: Hip Pain During Side Splits
Put your butt way behind the line of your feet. Then gradually, over several workouts, bring your hips forward until they will be in line with your feet.
