Preparing for 1st Tournament
I'm preparing for my first tournament and I'd appreciate any advice as to exercise/diet regimens. I am currenlty a red belt, but had been out of training for 2 years (law school) and only started back since January. My abilities are returning very quickly, but I'd really like to step it up for the tournament. I have about 6 weeks...let me know what you think.

A lot of things have to be taken into considerationwhen deciding what your pre-contest plan should look like:-
Are you trying to cut weight or gain weight?
What type of martial art are you competing in?
Is it points fighting or full contact?
How many rounds?
I think one of the variables that remains the same in any fighter's workout is fitness though.This is especially the case for you as you've only been back training a few months.

To be honest i think 6 weeks may not be enough time.If you'd been training constantly and were already in good shape then 6 weeks would be enough preperation time.
As you've only been training since January after a lay off i'd say gaining muscle,losing fat,and preparing yourself for full contact may be too much.

Being 6'1 and 200lbs/91kg if its WTF Taekwondo that you are competing in then that will put you in the +84 Heavy weight catagory.
Being 6'1 you are not small for the heavy weight catagory at your belt division so I think you could handle it. I think you should just aim at losing the exess fat and working on your aerobic/anaerobic systems and work on your tactical game plan.
If you are planning at competing in the black belt division or internationally then you would definately (in my opinion need to lose 15lbs/6kg) want to compete in the -84 middle weight catagory as the guys in heavy weight would be too big and strong for you (you are talking about some guys who are over 6'6 to 7'0 tall and in excess of upto 120kg)

I just wanted to thank both Dragon and Koryodan for their help. The tournament is over and I'm glad that I did it. I didn't win the match, but I definitely held my own and didn't make it easy for my opponent. At any rate, the experience has motivated me to train even harder in preparation for the next one.
