leg ligaments and training for splits

Post by Jamus »

Alright, prehaps someone can help me with this or give me some suggestions here. On page 108 of Stretching Scientifically, it states that losse ligaments can lead to joint destabilization or even osteoarthritis down the road. I have been seeing a physiotherapist for awhile now because of some tendonitis problems in my knee so I am not really doing any exercises for the legs right now. She says my hips are hypermobile and the ligaments of the hip are loose. She says I am not in danger of disloacting anything though so that's definitely a good thing. I have been like this my whole life as far back as I can remember and also I'll point out my mom is like this to by the way. She says also to avoid strenghtening the adductors doing adductor flys and Isometric stretches when I explined what they were. After following secrets of stretching DVD, I found I have the back and abdominal strength and I could easily do 100 reps with the maximum ankle weight I had available to me and adductor pulldowns(for the time being at least until my legs are feeling better But afterwords I have no idea if I should try to do them) I havent really tried doing much more than body weight squats as that is really the only thing for leg strengthening I can do safely at the moment. Given the fact that my hips are the way they are would it be safe for me to continue(when I am feeling better) to continue with training and conditioning for splits doing the general strenght exercises like squats and deadlifts and exercises specifically for hamstrings and adductors or is this really dangerous for someone like me to attempt to train for a side split? or even if I am able to achieve front and side splits, could it be a big problem later on in life? Maybe someone can help me out here. I really would like to do both front side splits and I am very close to achieving the front splits as demonstrated by Mr. Kurz in his book.

Oh ya I forgot to mention, I felt afraid to ask some of the questions that I am asking but more worried about the answers in this thread I made here today. I still really want to do the splits though.
