Full Recovery on Hamstring Tear

Post by uss2048 »

First of all, let me present my hamstring injury from start to current. Four years ago, I had a gradual onset injury on my right hamstring. I was limping. Two days later, my left hamstring felt pain too probably due to strength imbalance between the two legs and more. In the first two weeks of my injury, I tried to stretch lightly as part of the rehabiliation. But I ruptured a muscle fibre on my right hamstring, and felt a pop. It is a first time in my life experience.

Now, my left hamstring has full range of motion pain free. My right one is not quite there yet. Endurance is not fully recovered. Nor is strength I guess. We will need equipment to measure performance attribute like strength though. Currently, I can jog for twenty minutes, do martial art not at full intensity. I do not think I can exercise with full intensity, and I do not think I should attempt to. There is slight pain felt from time to time.

So, here is my first question - do I need surgery in order to have full recovery of my hamstrings?

Second, in the strength training part of hamstring injury rehabilitation, what order should these types of exercise be carried out - concentric, isometric and eccentric?

I would appreciate if Mr. Kurz or other members to reply to the above questions. Thanks in advance.

uss, if you are even thinking about surgery, you really need to discuss this with a competent doctor. Personally, I wouldn't trust any diagnosis that a stranger gives me on the Internet.

I was confused by your message. Are these old injuries that have become problems recently or have you been suffering with this condition for the past four years? My uninformed guess is that surgery isn't going to be able to give you a full recovery for a hamstring injury you suffered four years ago. I don't want to say any more for fear of scaring you, but I really recommend you talk to a doctor you can trust. I guess I'd be a bit surprised/impressed if medical science has gotten to the point that it can provide a full recovery from a four-year-old hamstring injury.

Good luck,
Mark

Hi mmeloon,

I am not saying we should trust any diagnosis that a stranger gives on the Internet. All I take these inputs are as reference and second opinion only. They might be valuable and good too. The one that you have made is certainly I would regard as valuable.

With regards to my injury said in my first post, it has not become worse recently. Sure there were up and down during the last four years of recovery. For example, I felt quite painful, especially in my right hamstring (actually one of the three hamstring muscles) during time when I was on my feet a lot in a job that I worked. I would say that my hamstring injury is near full recovery now. There is just a doubt whether it will get there eventually, how soon and by what further treatment.
