a diet plan for gaining muscle

Post by Haakon_Myrseth »

i was wondering if someone could help me a little bit with my diet plan.

last christmas i tried the anabolic diet, which basically is a high fat high protein diet, this includes high amounts of saturated fats as well, during the weekdays, and carbohydrate loading in the weekends. it felt like a big relief going on this diet, i felt so much better, before, i didnt really follow any diet plan eating whatever i felt like making sure i got the 200 g of proteins every day, but i had a big problem, being dependent on eating every 3 hours, getting angry and tired if i didnt. the typical symptoms of too high carb intake described in science of sports training.
i followed this diet to the latter, but before the summer, i started to feel terrible, my cholesterol had skyrocketed, no wonder.. so i abandomed it for good.
then i tried the ultimate diet by lyle mcdonald, which mainly is a diet for losing fat. its similar to the anabolic diet with carb loading in the weekend, but competely eliminates fats. after a few weeks i felt really really good, but i never got used to eating such a low amount of carbs during the weekdays, about 50 grams, day.
few weeks ago i was very happy with the results, so decided to take a break from the serious dieting and increased my carb intake, so i could get a higher calorie intake to gain some muscle mass, didnt take much time before i was gaining fat again. after experimenting i dont really think i can eat more than 150- 200 g of carbs per day without getting drowsy and sleepy and addicted to eating every 3 hours..
so im wondering, how should i eat for gaining muscle mass, when my carb intake cant go any higher, its hard to have a high calorie intake when both high amounts of saturated fats as well as carbs must be regulated so low.. :s

For health and thus for optimal function follow the Optimal Diet of dr. Kwasniewski. For muscle building you may have to increase the amount of protein over dr. Kwasniewski's gudelines. Follow your body's reactions/symptoms and you will know what's good for you.

I'm just really confused about the take on saturated fats. In your book science of sports traning you write that the intake of saturated fats should be limited, well being a medical student, I've seen that most medical litterature warns against the intake of saturated fats strongly and should be almost elimited from ones diet. However, it just doesnt make any sense to me, since mankind has since the early days of evulation, animal fat has been the most important constituent of ones diet, especially for people derived in northern areas. If I understand dr. Kwasniewski take on this issue, animal fats are the best source of energy and should make up most of ones calories
