Depends what you're looking for in a martial art.I would say that Wu Shu is more of a performance art than RBSD.hb18 wrote: ive tried to research this and cant find much on it, ny ideas, is it good, hows it compare ect ect??
Dragon.
Re: kung fu?
I'm not an expert on Kung Fu (its not the art that I practise) but my understanding is that Wushu is the very demanding style usually practised by the Shaolin monks and TV stars such as Jet Li. The style in films such as Hero, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, House of Flying Daggers etc. is mostly Wushu.dragon wrote:Better to train smart than train brutal.hb18 wrote: but in my lessons recently there are one or two guys that the assiatnt takes a side to to more brutle trining with, and im thinking, why the hell arnt i joining them, there my age and im just as able/ more so, its really frustring, i can do anything he chucks at me..rant over

I would take it as a compliment if your instructor recommends Wushu for you.
Good luck,
Mat
Wushu is definately a performance art, not a self defense art. Just this week I was talking to a friend who has trained wushu for years. Recently they were mugged, but were able to fend off the attacker.. after the attack they went over in their mind what they had done to defend themselves and suddenly realized that none of the moves they had used were part of their training - they were all instinct. So if you are after something that can be used for self defense, wushu is not it. But if you are after something that looks great, requires a high level of strength, flexibility and gracefulness to perform, then wushu is definately for you. Jet Li has a strong wushu back ground. The best movie to see wushu is Jet Li's classic 'the shaolin temple' http://cgi.ebay.com/Jet-Li-The-Shaolin- ... dZViewItem
Of course to really see what it is you would be learning, ask your teacher to show you some and see if it is what you are after.
When people refer to 'wushu' what they usually mean is actually called 'chang chuan' which is in english 'long fist'. Do some searches on the web - there is a heap of info out there.... the term 'wushu' actually just means 'martial art' whereas kung fu is refering more to a special skill. In chinese one's 'kungfu' may have nothing to do with martial arts at all - rather it is a special skill they have...usually something achieved through long practice.
