I never do sit-ups. I do V-sits, farmer burns, vacuum. Done daily these are all extremely good for toning the abs.

The abs are a very important part of the core stability muscles, so any exercise that requires you to maintain balance is very good for toning the abdominal area. Try things like doing hindu squats on a balance ball/wobble board.

Depends what you mean by toning.

If you mean shape, sculpt, etc, for visual effect then the majority of the work is done in the kitchen, not the gym.

You could have the best ab routine and even the best abs,but if your diet is sub-standard you will probably never see them.

If you mean you want to build/condition your abs, your chosen sport can dictate the best routine(sets, reps, etc).

Yes, diet is as much important as exercises.

The only thing I do for my abs is incorporating them into my push up rutine and it works great. That means when I do push ups I tense abs very hard.
You can also do them in pull ups rutine. Those exercises are very hard but you are working with your body as unit and that's a good thing if you are a martial artist.
In addition I sometimes perform sit ups with weights (low rep, heavier weights).

Important thing is to do them in low reps, no matter what exercises you are performing. Don't perform them in high reps like couple of 100 or something like that.

well i looked into it, really i need to lose weight first, i mean im not fat, but i do have a bit of a roll forming round my stomach, and i read you need to have like 8% body fat for abs to be visable, so i think my ads are tomned cos i do do alot of sit ups and abs training, but im just a tad porky.

so i spose the new question is wats the most effective exersice for weight loss, im starting to do alot of skipping again?

Skipping is a good exercise, just makesure the intensity is high enough.
I've had a lot of success with the Tabata method.

Which exercise did you use for Tabata Method?

I have read that 2 best exercises are front squats and thrusters (with the dumbells9.

How many times per week?

Danbor:- I used Tabata with skipping or sprinting usually 3 times per week.

hb18:-I wouldn't aim for a set number of rotations when you skip,i'd aim for length of time at first.Because i train in martial arts/boxing i perform 3 minute rounds of boxing.
When you have built up your endurance(5 rounds for example) you will then know your comfortable pace from your intense pace.
Then you can use methods like Tabata.

depends on your goals to what abs work is needed.

if you want your abs to poke out more then you need to use resistance
training and work in the 8-12 rep zone.
(by poke out i mean be more pronounced individually)

if you want to cut your trunk and build endurance then you need to
work on high reps with no resistance.
