question about sets

Post by mears »

I have read a number of books yet still am confused about the need for certain number of sets.

You get stronger by lifting progressively heavier weights. Say you're pressing 100 lbs for two, maybe three reps max, and after a five minute rest, you do another set for two reps max. Now, what's the benefit in doing more sets than the two already done? Are you getting stronger by doing more sets with the same weight? Or adding strength endurance instead? Are you subjecting yourself to injury by doing more?

The same goes for sets of 5-8 reps. Benefits of 3, 4, 5 sets? Where's the evidence that "x" many sets are more beneficial regarding getting stronger, not looking more buffed?

The Position Stand "Progression Models in Resistance Training for Healthy Adults" published by the American College of Sports Medicine may answer your question. Click on the pdf for that article. http://journals.lww.com/acsm-msse/pages ... ectionId=1
